Our Scratch Off Technology is a Winner

Flexpress variable data scratch off

If you’ve been wishing you could streamline the production of your next scratch off promotion, you’re in luck! Thanks to our Variable Data capabilities we can print all of the varied messages and codes inline without missing a beat or slowing the process down. Then to top it off, we can top it off – literally, with the scratch off coating. Wow, right? It is no secret that Variable Data Printing is a perfect solution for producing the multiple versions needed for typical contests and promotions. It is not uncommon for the majority of offset printers to print the losing tickets offset and the smaller quantity of winning tickets digital. The slight variations make it possible to tell the difference between the two when they are side by side, without scratching anything off. By printing all pieces digital that problem is solved. Unlike traditional offset printing, digital printing can make changes on the fly so there is no need to stop and change out plates. The changes happen instantly as the sheets pass through the press and all tickets will have a uniform look and feel. The only hurdle in the past was the application of the opaque scratch off … Continue reading

Service on Display

Service on Display

You’ll notice Flexpress is different the minute you walk into our lobby. Our people are easily accessible. So accessible, in fact, that you will find both Sandy, our CSR; and Philip, our manager, stationed right there when you walk in. Why? Because we believe in putting service front and center. No gatekeeper, no barriers, just quick and friendly answers. The difference doesn’t stop with Philip and Sandy’s customer-friendly presence. Right behind Philip’s desk is a window to our bindery with a great view of the inner workings of our bindery on display for all to see. Most printers prefer to keep this area at the back of the building, out of sight. Perhaps because they adhere to the notion that much like sausage making, there are some things that are better appreciated when the process is unknown. We couldn’t disagree more. We have the window to show off our people and our process. It is not only fascinating to watch projects come together but we also think it provides an opportunity to see who is doing the work and realize the pride our employees take in their efforts. At Flexpress we see this important step in the production process as … Continue reading

Are QR Codes Here to Save Print?

Are QR Codes Here to Save Print?

It seems many pundits are ready to write print media off as a dying industry. Newspaper and magazine subscriptions are dwindling. The post office is having financial problems. eReaders are cutting into traditional book sales. Marketing dollars are being spent in a wider variety of ways as the Internet and electronic devices continue to offer up new ways to reach consumers. Yes, it is an undeniable fact that new technologies are changing the way marketing is done. But that isn’t all bad news for print. Take for instance the emergence of QR (Quick Read) Codes. QR Codes were created in 1994 for use in automotive industry inventory control. Now, it seems, those crazy quilt configurations of black and white squares just might be print’s new best friend, if not actual savior. It is a safe bet to say everyone has seen one. The number of people using them grows daily. A study released in June 2011 by comScore found that the users were more likely to be men (60.5% of scanners) and aged 18 to 34 (53.4%) and have a household income of $100,000 or above (36.1%). The premise seems simple enough in a magical teleporter kind of way. Use … Continue reading

Digital vs. Offset Printing

Digital vs. Offset Printing

“When is a job better suited to digital vs. offset printing?”  It is a common question. And also one with constantly changing answers. In the past the arguments for offset used to be very easy to rattle off: better resolution/quality; the ability to use PMS colors rather than rely solely on CMYK; more paper options; larger sheet size; better cost per unit on long runs. But technology is moving at an amazing speed and digital presses are putting those arguments to rest. Digital press resolution is improving to the point that the naked eye has difficulty seeing the difference in dpi. There are now digital presses on the market capable of printing actual PMS colors – as well as white ink, which was unheard of only a short time ago. As noted in a previous blog of ours, paper is no longer limited to plain white bond. Specialty papers in various weights and finishes, even plastic, print beautifully on our iGens. As for sheet size, that is expanding, too. The largest digital press currently on the market can take a 13”x47” sheet! That leaves the matter of the size of the job. Historically, digital printing has been the choice for … Continue reading

Great Results Start With Good Files

Great Results Start With Good Files

As a certain pizza chain likes to say “Better ingredients make a better pizza.” So it goes with printing as well. Better art files make a better printed piece. In an effort to help everyone achieve better results we offer a few simple pointers that can make a big difference. Start With the Right Tools Don’t get us wrong. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher are all good software programs and they do exactly what they were built to do. Unfortunately, they were not built to be page layout programs for use in actual printing. When used in printing anywhere beyond office type laser printers they can create a multitude of output problems, not the least of which is reflowed – or worse yet – missing text. Only true design software can give the best results. By design software we mean InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and QuarkXpress. Yes, we know these software packages can be expensive for our customers who are not marketing firms or ad agencies. But, if you plan on producing more than an occasional piece, the cost will be well worth it and will pay off in polished communication materials that will represent your company or client without ugly … Continue reading
