Flexpress Digital welcomes 2014

We have a confession. Having the new year fall in the middle of the week provided a nice way to ease back into the routine after the holidays, but we are actually excited to begin the first “full” work week of 2014. We know, it sounds crazy – and maybe even a little masochistic – but the truth is, the latter part of 2013 saw us adding a number of new presses and services and we can’t wait to rev them up and go! The big news, of course, is that we now have three Xerox iGen digital presses, and the newest addition is the biggest and fastest one yet. It can handle a whopping 14.33” x 26” sheet size with a printable area of 14” x 25.5”. It runs a speedy 150 pages per minute, making our quick turnarounds even quicker. The print quality is incredible, too, as it delivers improved detail and sharper images with even better color. We’ll save all the specs and a few of the details for another blog devoted just to this press. Believe us, it’s pretty special. To complement our big presses we’ve also upgraded to a new 4-color envelope press. It makes … Continue reading

Looking Back and Looking Forward: 20 Years and Counting

Looking Back and Looking Forward: 20 Years and Counting

December marks our 20th year in business at Flexpress and we can’t help but marvel at the changes that have taken place since 1991. When we started, Johnny Carson was still the host of the Tonight Show; Michael Jordan was playing for the Chicago Bulls (the first time around) and The Silence of the Lambs was scaring the bejeebers out of us at the movies. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991 but M.C. Hammer was Too Legit to Quit. On the technology front, Microsoft released MS-DOS 5.0 and Apple rolled out the PowerBook 100 as well as the Macintosh Classic II desktop computer that came with a 9-inch black and white screen and a choice of either a 40 or 80 MB hard drive. In August of 1991, Tim Berners-Lee introduced us to his “World Wide Web” web browser concept and the National Science Foundation made the Internet available for commercial use. One million forward thinking computer users jumped on the net that year and, odds are, they’ve never signed off. Things have certainly changed in the printing industry in the past 20 years as well. In 1991 most print jobs were still provided as paste up to traditional printers and … Continue reading

Service on Display

Service on Display

You’ll notice Flexpress is different the minute you walk into our lobby. Our people are easily accessible. So accessible, in fact, that you will find both Sandy, our CSR; and Philip, our manager, stationed right there when you walk in. Why? Because we believe in putting service front and center. No gatekeeper, no barriers, just quick and friendly answers. The difference doesn’t stop with Philip and Sandy’s customer-friendly presence. Right behind Philip’s desk is a window to our bindery with a great view of the inner workings of our bindery on display for all to see. Most printers prefer to keep this area at the back of the building, out of sight. Perhaps because they adhere to the notion that much like sausage making, there are some things that are better appreciated when the process is unknown. We couldn’t disagree more. We have the window to show off our people and our process. It is not only fascinating to watch projects come together but we also think it provides an opportunity to see who is doing the work and realize the pride our employees take in their efforts. At Flexpress we see this important step in the production process as … Continue reading

It's Alive: New Website, New Insight

Great news! Our freshly redesigned website is up and ready to serve you at www.flexpress.com. We think you will find it easy to navigate and informative. In addition to more details about our equipment, we have expanded our services page to show just how far our capabilities go beyond digital printing: specialty papers, variable data printing, custom die creation, bindery and finishing, fulfillment services, packing and shipping and even graphic design services. Even more importantly, we’ve included a little insight into our team – the great folks who know how to operate all the cool equipment and provide the services. We’ve also made some improvements to our quote request and file upload pages. And the new site has links to our blog, Facebook, and Twitter pages because more than anything, we want to keep in touch and listen to what you have to say. Seize the Die!

Seize the Die!

Some print projects call for something out of the box. Others call for something in a box. Fortunately, at Flexpress we can help you with both. We have an extensive library (50 and counting) of dies available to our customers, so feel free to stretch those boundaries, round those corners, and add some pop to your next project. Customized shapes, pop-ups and promo items are a great way to stand out from the crowd and get more bang for your marketing buck. And speaking of bucks, we don’t charge for dies we already have, only new custom ones. In the case of existing dies you pay only for the cutting charges. If you have a particular size or shape in mind feel free to ask if we have it available. To ensure a smooth printing experience we can provide a template for your design team. Since all printing presses can have slight shifts – even our iGens can move up to 1/16th of an inch – we highly recommend following the live area and bleed area guides on the templates. As for the dies themselves, we have door hangers, playing cards, popcorn boxes, coasters, bottle neck hangers, pop-up business card … Continue reading

The Dawn of Digital Printing in Dallas

The Dawn of Digital Printing in Dallas

1991. A couple of guys working at an accounting software company realized that their company – which owned two large Kodak duplicators to print their constantly updated manuals – wasn’t the only one that could benefit from digital printing. On that day, the print scene in Dallas took a turn for the better. Sounds epic, doesn’t it? Well, it was for us. Flexpress started with 3,000 SF of space, two duplicators, and no sales force, but a lot of optimism for the future of printing. Our first clients were Kee Kopy and Speedy Print. Twenty years later, both are still customers, and additionally Flexpress is now serving advertising agencies, in-house marketing departments and traditional printers in the Dallas-Fort Worth market – and beyond. While our competitors are relatively new to digital imaging, our experience and commitment have kept us at the forefront of the changing technology every step of the way. Even from the beginning we weren’t content to only do black and white prints. Our semi digital Kodak 2110 duplicator (shown in the photo above) could drop in basic colors and print digital addressing and limited variable data. It was part of our commitment to always give the customer … Continue reading
