Employee Spotlight: Kris L.

This month our employee spotlight turns to Kris, one of the most positive, upbeat people we know. He is a great team player and a favorite co-worker in every department. In typical fashion, Kris willingly agreed to help us by taking time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions… with a smile. How long have you been with the company? I have been with Flexpress for 3 years now. But it feels like I just started a few months ago. How would you describe your duties here? I started in the bindery and I still pitch in there when needed. But I now handle the daily shipping, whether UPS, FedEx, USPS or couriers. I also assist Philip and Sandy up front from time to time and I help everyone if they have iPhone issues, especially in setting up their emails on them. What was the most unusual job you held before joining Flexpress? My first job I worked for Dominos Pizza. That was pretty interesting and an experience. I didn’t know how picky people were with pizza. LOL What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is the interaction I have with … Continue reading

My job at Flexpress varies due to being a printer and working in bindery. At times I am collating books, padding, inserting, tabs and binding, and other times I’m working the printers, running jobs and monitoring the machines. What is your favorite part of your job? The favorite part of my job would be the spontaneous goods and big potlucks we have about every month. I can never resist free food and desserts. What one thing would people be most surprised to find out about you? One thing I think people would be most surprised to find out is that I was in All District Choir. What do you like to do outside of work? When I’m not working, I love to relax and just hang out with friends. I also love dancing, filming, going to the gym and playing sports such as football and basketball. I understand you are in a dance group. How did you get interested in that? Counting the Days

Flexpress digitally printed calendars

There are seven Mondays left in 2011. We know this because we checked the calendar. That’s the beauty of those timely markers. Every day, week and month can be seen and measured, organized and counted. Even as we are left wondering where this year went we can also look ahead to the next. Perhaps it is because of our love for paper and the printed page, but there is something very reassuring about an actual calendar that can be touched. With them our days are presented in an instantly recognizable measurement with pages to turn as appointments are noted and days marked off. It should come as no surprise that at Flexpress we print many kinds of calendars. The shapes, sizes and formats are as varied as the uses for them. We have templates for most and can help with the design and production of others as needed. Among the more popular: Wall calendars – both saddle-stitched and spiral bound Posters – either a single year at a glance or individual tear-off months available in large format sizes Table tents – ideal for monthly events and special promotions Business card – terrific for appointment reminders Magnetic – can be square … Continue reading

Service on Display

Service on Display

You’ll notice Flexpress is different the minute you walk into our lobby. Our people are easily accessible. So accessible, in fact, that you will find both Sandy, our CSR; and Philip, our manager, stationed right there when you walk in. Why? Because we believe in putting service front and center. No gatekeeper, no barriers, just quick and friendly answers. The difference doesn’t stop with Philip and Sandy’s customer-friendly presence. Right behind Philip’s desk is a window to our bindery with a great view of the inner workings of our bindery on display for all to see. Most printers prefer to keep this area at the back of the building, out of sight. Perhaps because they adhere to the notion that much like sausage making, there are some things that are better appreciated when the process is unknown. We couldn’t disagree more. We have the window to show off our people and our process. It is not only fascinating to watch projects come together but we also think it provides an opportunity to see who is doing the work and realize the pride our employees take in their efforts. At Flexpress we see this important step in the production process as … Continue reading

What Does It Take to Be a Digital Printer?

What Does It Take to Be a Digital Printer?

What skill set is needed for a successful career in the print business? This is a question we were confronted with this week as we were visited by a great group of educators from the Academy of Media Arts and Technology at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton, TX. They came to tour our facilities and learn a bit more about the current state of the graphic design and print industry in order to better prepare their students for real world positions in the new economy. And, as is the case with all good teachers, they made us think. So, after carefully considering the questions they posed, we’ve narrowed it down to three main skills: Mechanical Aptitude Of course, the design and production of printed materials requires the ability to think logically about how things work. One has to be able to think in 3D for packaging and understand how even something as simple as a trifold brochure will look when translated from a flat layout into a folded piece. If it doesn’t work in the layout stage it won’t get any better as it moves through the process. Speaking of the process, understanding technology is a must when working … Continue reading
