Paper Proofs – Keeping It Real

Paper Proofs – Keeping It Real

We care about quality and we’ve got the proof to show it. In our previous post we touched on some ways good file preparation can improve the final printed piece. This time let’s focus on something we do to ensure the best results – our proofing system. It’s simple, really. We supply proofs for approval on the actual stock your job will print on, printed on the actual press that will run it. Yes, we know many printers today rely on PDFs emailed to the customer for final approval. Although we will do this if the client requests it we are very firm believers in the “No Surprises” way of doing business. Sending PDFs for approval can have a number of drawbacks. If viewed on a monitor the color will not be accurate because the screen is RGB and monitors vary wildly in color depending on their settings. Printing the PDF out on a desktop laser printer for review is also a hit or miss proposition. The best way to know if the job will be output the way you want it is to see it in all its printed glory. An actual proof that you can hold in your … Continue reading

Great Results Start With Good Files

Great Results Start With Good Files

As a certain pizza chain likes to say “Better ingredients make a better pizza.” So it goes with printing as well. Better art files make a better printed piece. In an effort to help everyone achieve better results we offer a few simple pointers that can make a big difference. Start With the Right Tools Don’t get us wrong. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher are all good software programs and they do exactly what they were built to do. Unfortunately, they were not built to be page layout programs for use in actual printing. When used in printing anywhere beyond office type laser printers they can create a multitude of output problems, not the least of which is reflowed – or worse yet – missing text. Only true design software can give the best results. By design software we mean InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and QuarkXpress. Yes, we know these software packages can be expensive for our customers who are not marketing firms or ad agencies. But, if you plan on producing more than an occasional piece, the cost will be well worth it and will pay off in polished communication materials that will represent your company or client without ugly … Continue reading

Move Over, Pulp Fiction

Move Over, Pulp Fiction

Plain vanilla. White bread. Borrrinng. Digital printing means being limited to a narrow choice of stock, right? Many people think that due to short runs and the very process of digital printing, that the only paper choices are white coated or white uncoated. It’s time to put that myth to rest. Those days are long gone at Flexpress. The truth is, digital press capabilities have improved dramatically over the years, and continue to do so. Our Xerox iGens can print on gloss, matte, dull and silk coated papers as well as uncoated textured and specialty stocks, even recycled. Additionally – and we are really excited about this – we have an agreement with a paper dealer that makes it possible for us to provide specialty papers no matter how short the run. And by specialty papers, we mean it. This exclusive agreement is like a super nova in terms of opening the design possibilities for digital projects. Seriously! Announcements, invitations, pocket folders and presentation kits can now be printed in whatever quantity you need, on the stock you really want, without sacrificing your creative vision or blowing your budget with minimum carton requirements. We offer a wide assortment of colors, weights … Continue reading

Seize the Die!

Seize the Die!

Some print projects call for something out of the box. Others call for something in a box. Fortunately, at Flexpress we can help you with both. We have an extensive library (50 and counting) of dies available to our customers, so feel free to stretch those boundaries, round those corners, and add some pop to your next project. Customized shapes, pop-ups and promo items are a great way to stand out from the crowd and get more bang for your marketing buck. And speaking of bucks, we don’t charge for dies we already have, only new custom ones. In the case of existing dies you pay only for the cutting charges. If you have a particular size or shape in mind feel free to ask if we have it available. To ensure a smooth printing experience we can provide a template for your design team. Since all printing presses can have slight shifts – even our iGens can move up to 1/16th of an inch – we highly recommend following the live area and bleed area guides on the templates. As for the dies themselves, we have door hangers, playing cards, popcorn boxes, coasters, bottle neck hangers, pop-up business card … Continue reading

The Dawn of Digital Printing in Dallas

The Dawn of Digital Printing in Dallas

1991. A couple of guys working at an accounting software company realized that their company – which owned two large Kodak duplicators to print their constantly updated manuals – wasn’t the only one that could benefit from digital printing. On that day, the print scene in Dallas took a turn for the better. Sounds epic, doesn’t it? Well, it was for us. Flexpress started with 3,000 SF of space, two duplicators, and no sales force, but a lot of optimism for the future of printing. Our first clients were Kee Kopy and Speedy Print. Twenty years later, both are still customers, and additionally Flexpress is now serving advertising agencies, in-house marketing departments and traditional printers in the Dallas-Fort Worth market – and beyond. While our competitors are relatively new to digital imaging, our experience and commitment have kept us at the forefront of the changing technology every step of the way. Even from the beginning we weren’t content to only do black and white prints. Our semi digital Kodak 2110 duplicator (shown in the photo above) could drop in basic colors and print digital addressing and limited variable data. It was part of our commitment to always give the customer … Continue reading
